We buy everything
At full price, from the same page you would buy it from. No press samples, no gifted product, no brand accounts. If we have not paid for it, it does not appear.
A recommendation you cannot check is worth very little. So here is the whole process, in the open: what we buy, how long we live with it, what we look at, and what makes us stop recommending something.
At full price, from the same page you would buy it from. No press samples, no gifted product, no brand accounts. If we have not paid for it, it does not appear.
A full season for clothing, including washing. At least three applications and removals for anything cosmetic. The interesting information arrives late.
We earn the same percentage whichever brand you buy from, which is precisely why it cannot tilt a recommendation. Where a cheaper option is genuinely better, we say so, including when it earns us less.
The list is maintained, not accumulated. When a brand slips, it is removed rather than quietly left up — a list that only grows is a catalogue, not an edit.
Hang it by one shoulder to see whether it was cut on-grain. Check that the shoulder seam sits on the shoulder corner and stays there. Turn it inside out for seam allowance width, edge finishing and whether the lining is stitched or glued. Then wash it the way a real person washes things, and look again.
Wear time to visible grow-out, not to first chip. Removal difficulty measured by whether the product lifts with a standard ten-minute soak or has to be forced. Color accuracy against the bottle at two coats. Then repeat, because the second and third applications are where cheap base coats give themselves away.
Worn continuously, including in the shower and asleep, because that is how people actually wear everyday pieces. Checked at the highest-contact points for plating wear. A year is the minimum before anything gets a recommendation, which is why the jewelry list is currently empty.
SOUL is a small independent edit, not a testing lab. We do not run tensile tests or lab assays, and we are not pretending to. What we have is a small number of products used properly over a long period by people who care about the outcome — and a rule that we would rather leave a page empty than fill it with something we do not use.
No. Everything written about here was bought at full price with our own money. Gifted product creates an obligation, however subtle, and the whole value of a short list is that there is no obligation behind it.
No, and there is no rate card to ask about. Brands cannot buy their way in here, cannot see a page before it publishes, and cannot request changes after.
Affiliate commission. If you buy through a link here, the brand pays us a percentage and you pay exactly the same price. That commission is the same regardless of which brand you buy from, so it cannot influence which one we recommend.
Long enough to see it fail if it is going to. For clothing that means a full season including washing; for nail products, at least three full applications and removals. First impressions are the least useful information there is.
A drop in construction quality, a change in sizing without notice, or a support experience that would embarrass us to have recommended. Removal does not require the brand to have done something dramatic — quietly getting worse is enough.
You'll hear why we love something before you hear anything else about it.
